The Fortified Roofing Program Up Close

FORTIFIED™ is a voluntary program for construction and re-roofing, specifically created to enhance the resilience of homes and commercial buildings against severe weather conditions. These include high winds, hail, hurricanes, and even tornadoes. The program aims to fortify structures, ensuring their durability and ability to withstand the forces of nature.

A Stronger Roof System for Your Home

Regardless of the type of roof you have, whether it's shingles, metal, or tile, adhering to the Fortified Roof requirements will enhance the strength of your home.

Stronger Edges

FORTIFIED™ uses a broader drip edge and a fully adhered starter strip. When employed in combination, they form a more robust system.

Sealed Roof Deck

To prevent water damage, FORTIFIED™ requires roof decks to be properly sealed.

Better Attachment

Rather than using standard nails, FORTIFIED™ uses ring-shank nails arranged in an enhanced pattern to securely fasten your home's roof deck.

Impact-Resistant Shingles

In areas prone to hailstorms, the FORTIFIED™ standard uses shingles that have been tested by IBHS to demonstrate their ability to withstand hail up to 2 inches in diameter.

Why Choose a Fortified Roof?

Fortified Roofing is a purpose-built solution to safeguard against common damages caused by high winds, hurricanes, hailstorms, severe thunderstorms, and even tornadoes up to EF-2. Whether your roof is composed of shingles, metal, or tile, adhering to the Fortified Roof requirements will fortify your home and enhance its resilience.

Louisiana Fortify Homes Program Guidelines

There are plenty of ways you might be eligible for the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program. Review some of the guidelines to better understand the program.

  • Homeowners are eligible for the program only if they reside in their primary residence and can provide proof of a homestead exemption on the property during the application process.

  • Homeowners are required to provide evidence of an active wind insurance policy and a valid flood insurance policy for properties situated in a Special Flood Hazard Area.

  • New construction homes, condominiums and mobile homes do not qualify.

  • Duplexes and similar structures can be considered eligible if the building serves as the homeowner's primary residence and if the homeowner can provide verification of a homestead exemption for the property.

  • To ensure homes meet the necessary standards, a FORTIFIED™ Evaluator determines their condition. Homeowners are required to cover the evaluation fee, usually ranging from $300 to $500.

  • Confirmation of a FORTIFIED™ Contractor that is willing to perform work before paying for an Evaluator to inspect the home is preferred. Thankfully, Storm Guard of New Orleans is a certified FORTIFIED™ Contractor!

  • Homeowners who begin work on the project before receiving approval from the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program will not be eligible for a grant.

  • To be eligible for the grant funding, the completed project must adhere to the FORTIFIED™ Roof standard.

  • Contractors receive grant funds directly, while homeowners are accountable for any expenses exceeding the granted amount.
